Family Photos with Flair – Vanity Fair Style Family Portraits

This style of portrait continues to be the eye catching success I had always hoped it would be. Once again I created a beautiful family portrait that I am really proud of and I know this family loves too. Over the years I have developed this style through influences such as Vanity Fair and the many photographers I follow, though I hope that there is something in here that is entirely my own. Having my work easily identified as my own was a goal of mine from the start. Getting to the point where people will want not just a portrait but a Christina Lauder portrait is where I’ve always wanted to be and I’m hoping I’m on way.

These portraits were created for the family of two professional photographers who wanted some portraits of their own. Family portraits isn’t really something one can do of oneself, at least not easily. So they needed the services of another and I was honoured to be chosen for the job.

They chose me not just for my style but also for my ability to pose my clients. Believe it or not, posing isn’t as easy as it might seem. It has taken me years to get to the point of understanding what is needed and being able to direct my clients into the correct positions for the most flattering yet natural look. Many people will say they want natural portraits, not anything posed but to be perfectly honest, the most natural looking portraits are often highly posed ones.

(If you’ve been following me you’ll know I love a guitar shot)

(And I love getting a sofa in there too.)

This family took the opportunity to do more than just their family portrait. We basically did every combination possible. Having family portraits made isn’t typically done often so we made sure we covered everything. I’m glad we did as we managed to create some wonderful images which I know they will appreciate for the rest of their lives. It will only become more valuable as time passes and they all inevitably change.

You’ll notice that they brought their dog along. Families with dogs will agree that they are a member of their family and therefore should be included in family portraits. So if you have a dog and want to bring them please know they are most welcome. Sometimes they are easier than children. No guarantees what we will get of course but it usually works out just fine as it did here.

Of course it was a must to do something special for Mum as well. I like to call these fashion portraits as there is definitely a fashion element here. This is a strong favourite for both myself and this lovely lady and I’m sure you can see why. There is a real elegance to this portrait that makes this such a timeless reminder of this time in her life. She looks so youthful and stylish I know she will look back on this with great fondness when she is older.

I can’t stress enough how important it is to capture moments in our lives and to keep them recorded for later on in life. And not just in digital form either. I know I harp on about this but I hear too often of people who keep all their photos on their phones, or on an old laptop, with no backups to protect them against the vast number of things that can happen to those devices. At the very least backup your files. But if you can, also take the time to print your photos. At my studio, all my digital files  come with fine art prints mounted and frame ready in an archival quality presentation box so even if you never get around to doing anything with your files you will have a wonderful collection of prints to admire.

This family, with so many to choose from, only managed to get their selection down to 23 images which I am thrilled about. When you go to that much effort it is wonderful to have it appreciated so much and to know that so many of my portraits will be cherished for years and years. When I think about it its really quite special to think that something I created can mean so much to other people. Another reminder of how lucky I am to have the career I have.

If you’ve been considering family portraits you are welcome to get in touch and discuss the possibilities. I offer no cost no obligation consultations so that I can give the opportunity for people to meet me, see my studio and products and learn more about the session in person. That way when a client books with me, they can be certain they’ve found the right photographer. Choosing the right photographer for something as special as this should come down to more than just a price list. Having a good relationship with your photographer can make all the difference.
